3 Schools for 3,000 children in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is often affected by famine or armed conflicts in the country. In recent years, the HS Timber Group and its subsidiary DABG have built up a close relationship with Ethiopia and it is very important to the Group's companies to support the people in the country.
The focus is on various projects that promote education and thus open up opportunities for young people.
Education as the foundation for a better future - building a school.
In a very remote region in Dogoma Yegot, around 200 kilometers from the capital, a new school is being built in Ethiopia. In future, 1,000 girls and boys can be taught in the new facility with eight classrooms. The construction of the school was initiated in 2020 by the now retired principal Peter Krasser and implemented together with Menschen für Menschen. The first scaffolding of the school building with classrooms, outbuildings and sanitary facilities is already in place.
However, the fear of rebel attacks and the long rainy season are making it difficult for construction companies to access the region. Construction is therefore progressing more slowly than originally planned. Menschen für Menschen expects the political situation to ease in the fall.
Since 1997, there has been a small clay and wood school in Dogoma Yegot, which is in a very poor structural condition, offers no protection from the rain and is infested with termites. The DAGB is financing the construction in cooperation with the HS Timber Group under the auspices of the Evergreen Private Foundation. The project is also being implemented by the organization Menschen für Menschen, which has already successfully
implemented several school projects in Ethiopia. The construction of another school in Tulu Becho has already been approved and is scheduled to begin in fall 2022.
